Police have arrested 13 activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League and Jubo League after they brought out a procession in Chattogram city to allegedly create violence as part of a conspiracy against the state and government.

The arrests were made in parts of the port city following the procession in the Barik Building area on Friday, the Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) said in a statement on Saturday.

The CMP also seized two buses and recovered four pieces of white cloth, 10 sticks and 13 pieces of bricks “used during the procession” from the scene, it adds.

According to the CMP, the members from the Awami League's affiliate organisations, whose activities are banned, travelled by two buses with cloths on their heads and started a procession in the Barik Building area, intending to sabotage as part of a conspiracy against the state and government.

“When a team from Double Mooring Police reached the spot, the protesters fled through nearby alleys with white cloths tied around their heads.”

Two of the arrestees are Halishahar Thana unit Jubo League President Md Omar Faruk and activist Sakibul Islam.

The rest include Double Mooring Thana unit Chhatra League Joint General Secretary Ahmed Reza, and its members Jishu Das, Md Saiful Alam Rubel, Md Shariful Islam, Md Ibrahim Khalil, Mohammad Mintu, Md Monirul Islam, Md Hannan, Md Junaidul Alam Tasnup and Md Irfan.

CMP Assistant Commissioner Aminur Rashid said a case has been filed over the incident.
