A Supreme Court lawyer has been detained after his wife was allegedly killed and her body set on fire at their home in Jamalpur.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday in the Mandalpara area of the town’s Doripara neighbourhood, said Yahia Al Mamun, additional superintendent of police (ASP) for Jamalpur Sadar Circle.
The victim, Tahmina Akhter Tania, 36, was the daughter of Abu Taher of the Mukundbari area of the town. Her husband, Hossain Md Taifur Rahman, 40, is the son of the late Nazrul Islam of Mandalpara. The couple have a son and a daughter.
Police, citing family members and locals, said residents noticed smoke coming from the house around 2am. They broke open a window and found Tania’s burnt body lying on a bed.
Members of Fire Service brought the fire under control after being informed of the incident.
Locals later caught Taifur, beat him and handed him over to police.
Police recovered the body and took the suspect into custody.
The victim’s uncle Monowar Hossain Cornell said Tania had returned to her husband’s home from her parents’ house around 8:30pm.
“Suddenly we heard she had been burnt to death. I want justice for this murder,” he said.
ASP Yahia said the killing was believed to be linked to a family dispute.
“Legal action is under way in this regard,” he said.
