A private car has plunged into the Shitalakhya River while attempting to board a ferry in Narayanganj’s Bandar Upazila, officials said.

The driver was later rescued and the vehicle recovered.

The incident occurred around 5:15pm on Thursday at Nabiganj Ferry Terminal, according to Senior Station Officer Nurul Alam Dulal of Hajiganj Fire Service and Civil Defence.

He said the car owner had stepped out before boarding, leaving the driver to manoeuvre the vehicle onto the ferry when it lost control and fell into the river.

Locals operating boats helped the driver reach the riverbank immediately after the accident.

Fire Service personnel recovered the submerged vehicle after an hour-long operation, bringing it ashore around 6:30pm, he added.

Driver Zakir Hossain said the accident occurred due to brake failure while attempting to drive onto the ferry.

He identified the owner as Nur Mohammad Rudra, chairman of a garment factory.
