Measures taken to repatriate Hadi murder accused: home minister

It comes a day after the prime suspect and one of his associates were apprehended in the Indian state of West Bengal

The Bangladesh government has taken the necessary measures to repatriate those accused in the murder of Inqilab Moncho convener Sharif Osman Hadi from India, the home minister says.

Salahuddin Ahmed made the remarks to the media after a meeting on the law-and-order situation in the country at the office of the Cox’s Bazar deputy commissioner on Monday.

His statement comes a day after the prime suspect in the case and one of his associates were apprehended in the Indian state of West Bengal.Authorities in India had previously issued strenuous denials when Dhaka Metropolitan Police had asserted nearly two and a half months ago that several suspects, including prime suspect Faisal, had taken shelter in India.

Indian media outlets, however, have a bulletin from the West Bengal Police’s Special Task Force (STF), confirmed the duo’s arrest on Sunday.

Salahuddin said: "The Ministry of Home Affairs has requested the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (to take measures in this regard). We’re trying to bring them back under the extradition treaty between the two countries."

Not All Incidents Are Mob Violence

Issuing a warning against considering different recent as incidents mob violence, he said: “It is not okay to describe all occurrences as being linked to mobocracy.”

He, nevertheless, vowed to take stricter measures if mob violence takes place on the streets.

“Mob culture should not exist in Bangladesh.”

Replying to a query on publishing the list of drug dealers, Salahuddin said the government has no plans to make such a list public.

He also spoke of bolstering the anti-terrorism crackdown across the country.
