A Jamaat-e-Islami activist has been admitted to hospital after unidentified assailants arriving in an autorickshaw opened fire on him in Noakhali’s Begumganj.
The shooting took place around 11:30pm on Sunday on a road in Ayubpur village under Amanullapur Union, Begumganj Police Inspector (Investigation) Habibur Rahman said.
The injured, 25-year-old Mainul Islam Mahin, was first treated at Noakhali General Hospital before being referred to Dhaka for advanced treatment.
Witness Shaikhul Arefin Shihab said Mahin was talking with friends in front of his house when the attackers arrived.
“Four to five people came in a CNG-run autorickshaw, switched on torch lights and fired a shot. All of them had their faces covered,” he added.
He added that the bullet hit Mahin’s leg, causing him to fall, after which the attackers fled. Locals later rescued him and took him to the hospital.
Emergency Medical Officer Dr Hassan Al Mulk said Mahin was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital after receiving primary treatment as his injuries were serious.
Begumganj Upazila Jamaat Secretary Abdur Rahim said, “Mahin is our activist. We initially suspect this may be politically motivated.”
Inspector Habibur said police had visited the scene after receiving reports of the shooting.
“It is not yet confirmed who carried out the attack,” he added.
