Thousands of comrades-in-arms, political colleagues, and supporters have bid a final farewell to valiant freedom fighter Engineer Mosharraf Hossain with slogans.
As soon as the funeral prayers ended, his body was placed in an ambulance. At that moment, thousands of political leaders and activists surrounded the vehicle from all sides.
When the ambulance started moving, thousands of voices chanted: “Bir Chattalar Mosharraf Bhai, we have not forgotten you,” “Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu,” and “Sheikh Hasina will return, Bangladesh will smile.”
Amid the chants, leaders and activists accompanied the vehicle carrying the Awami League leader’s body as it departed from the Jamiatul Falah Mosque ground in Chattogram. Police personnel were standing at the main gate of the field at the time.
Showered with the love of thousands, Mosharraf set off for his ancestral home in Dhum village of Mirsharai.
People from several political parties and all walks of life joined the funeral prayers.
The prayer service was held at 11:15am on Thursday. From 10am, people from different professions and classes had started to gather at the location.
Before the prayer, Chattogram City Corporation Mayor and BNP leader Dr Shahadat Hossain offered his rememberance.
"A colourful and distinguished politician, former minister and valiant freedom fighter. Engineer Mosharraf Hossain made immense contributions to greater Chattogram,” he said. “On behalf of BNP’s metropolitan unit, the Chattogram City Corporation, and the honourable prime minister, I express deep condolences.”
“The people of Chattogram will always remember his contributions. We pray to Almighty Allah to grant him paradise. Chattogram will always remember him."
North Chattagram Awami League General Secretary Sheikh Ataur Rahman said, "His role in the Liberation War of 1971 must always be remembered. We have lost him. I did politics with him throughout my life."
Former city mayor Mahmudul Islam Chowdhury said, "I have memories with him since the Pakistan era. He took many initiatives for the development of Chattogram. He listened to others. Mosharraf Hossain will remain an unforgettable name in the history of Chattogram. He was a frontline leader of the Liberation War. His inspiration, encouragement, and role in the war were immense. His contribution to the development of Chattogram was great. His qualities cannot be fully described. He understood development planning very well. Today he is leaving us. He worked for the welfare of the people. The huge turnout at today’s funeral proves what kind of politician he was."
Mosharraf’s son Sabedur Rahman, said:
"After being in the ICU for a long time, he passed away. He was a valiant freedom fighter. He worked for the country’s development. Please pray for my father. If he ever caused pain to anyone during his long journey, please forgive him. I also thank the law enforcing agencies for helping organise the funeral prayers."
Tributes were also paid by CPB leader Mohammad Shah Alam, NAP-Communist Party-Student Union Guerrilla Force, Mirsharai Association Chattogram, and leaders of various organisations.
Leaders and activists from Awami League, Jubo League, Chhatra League, BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, Jatiya Party, CPB, and other parties joined the funeral prayer.
Mosharraf was born on Jan 12, 1943, in Dhum village of Mirsharai Upazila, Chattogram. His father, S Rahman, was a member of the Provincial Assembly in the 1960s. After Partition, he moved from Kolkata to Chattogram and started a business named Orient Builders Corporation.
He completed his matriculation from Chattogram Collegiate School and intermediate studies from Sir Ashutosh Government College.
While studying engineering in Lahore, he became involved in the Six-Point Movement. At that time, he also served as president of the East Pakistan Student Council.
After returning from Lahore, he joined Awami League politics and was elected a member of the East Pakistan Provincial Assembly in 1970. During the Liberation War, he was a Sub-Sector Commander of Sector No. 1 and led several important operations.
One of the framers of the 1972 Constitution, Mosharraf was elected MP six times from the Mirsharai seat of Chattogram as an Awami League candidate in 1973, 1986, 1996, 2008, 2014, and 2018. Until his death, he was a Presidium Member of the Awami League.
In the 1996–2001 Awami League government, he served as minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism. Later, he became minister for Housing and Public Works. He also held the same post in the 2014–2019 Awami League government.
After the fall of the Awami League government during the 2024 July Uprising, Mosharraf was arrested on Oct 27 of that year from the Vatara Police Station area of the capital. He was later taken to Chattogram Central Jail.
On the night of Aug 5, 2025, he became seriously ill and was admitted from the prison hospital to Bangladesh Medical University Hospital. He was released on bail on Aug 14, 2025.
Mosharraf is survived by three sons and a daughter. His son Mahbub Rahman Ruhel was elected MP from Chattogram-1 constituency in the 12th National Parliamentary Election with Awami League nomination.
Before the final funeral prayer in Mirsharai on Thursday afternoon, this valiant freedom fighter will be given a guard of honour.
