Bangladesh has approved the creation of three new Upazilas and one new police station under an administrative reorganisation.
The move will create new units in Chattogram, Cumilla and Mymensingh, taking the total number of Upazilas in Bangladesh to 498 and police stations to 640.
The approvals came on Tuesday at a meeting of the National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reform (NICAR) at the Secretariat, presided over by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Under the decision, Halda Police Station will be formed by splitting Chattogram’s Hathazari Police Station.
A new Upazila named Fatikchhari North will be created with six unions from Fatikchhari Upazila in Chattogram.
In Cumilla, Bangara Upazila will be formed by dividing Muradnagar Upazila.
In Mymensingh, a new Upazila named Gafargaon South will be created with eight unions now under Pagla Police Station in Gafargaon Upazila.
Prime Minister’s Deputy Press Secretary Hasan Shiplu said the committee also decided to bring parts of Narayanganj and Gazipur under the eastern new town project of the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) into the Dhaka district.
The NICAR meeting was attended by Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir, Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman, Road Transport Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam, Housing Minister Zakaria Taher, State Minister for Public Administration Abdul Bari, Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani and Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister ABM Abdus Sattar.
