Top government and opposition leaders have teamed up to tackle longstanding civic headaches in the Dhaka-15 constituency, promising swift action on water and gas shortages, dengue, juvenile crime and illegal canal encroachment.
Leader of the Opposition Shafiqur Rahman, State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam, and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Md Safiqul Islam Khan made the joint commitment on Wednesday.
According to the DNCC, the visits covered West Shewrapara, East Monipur, Baishteki and Ibrahimpur, where the leaders inspected local canals, cleanliness drives, dengue hotspots and ongoing gas and water issues.
Addressing residents, Shafiqur said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had responded to concerns raised in parliament, paving the way for what he described as the first joint effort by the ruling and opposition camps to solve local problems.
The Jamaat-e-Islami chief said severe water shortages, gas disruptions and “Kishore Gang” activity could not be resolved by the government or law enforcers alone, urging residents to join the effort to improve public safety and neighbourhood conditions.
He also thanked Tarique for facilitating such “a rare, public-focused” collaborative initiative.
State Minister Alam said the government had joined the outreach on the prime minister’s instruction, noting that Shafiqur is the constituency’s elected lawmaker while the DNCC remains the service body for local residents.
He said the city corporation had brought its full team to hear public complaints and promised that problems in Dhaka-15 would be addressed in phases based on priority.
DNCC chief Safiqul said the city authority was continuing work on waste removal, dengue prevention, canal recovery, drain repairs, road maintenance and cleanliness campaigns under the prime minister’s broader “Clean Dhaka, Green Dhaka” drive.
At the meetings, the three leaders called on residents of West Shewrapara and Monipur to quickly identify locations for five new water pumps aimed at easing the local supply crisis.
Each of them announced Tk 2 million from their personal funds for every pump, the DNCC said.
Senior officials from Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA), Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited, DNCC and political leaders were also present.
