Man dies of burns after Narayanganj gas blast

A man has died of his burn injuries following an explosion caused by a gas leak at a house in Narayanganj's Fatullah area.

The deceased, 35-year-old Kalam, was undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery and had burns on 95 percent of his body.

He died around 11am on Monday, said Shawon Bin Rahman, assistant professor at the institute.

Kalam's wife Saima, 32, son Munna, 7, and two daughters Katha, 7, and Munni, 10, are still undergoing treatment at the same hospital.

Saima has suffered burns on 60 percent of her body, Munna 30 percent, Katha 52 percent and Munni 35 percent.

The couple, along with their three children, suffered burns in an explosion at a house in Fatullah's Giridhara area on Sunday morning.

Later, the five were taken to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka. At that time, the institute's assistant professor Shawon said that the condition of all of them was "alarming".

Kalam, a vegetable seller by profession, lived in the house with his wife and children. The Fire Service and Civil Defence initially suspected that there was a leak in the gas line in the kitchen attached to one of the rooms in the house. This caused the gas to accumulate in the closed room and explode when it came into contact with the fire.

Meanwhile, the following Monday morning, a father and his three sons were burnt in an explosion caused by a gas leak at another house in Fatullah. They were also admitted to the National Institute of Burns and Plastic Surgery in critical condition.
