Police have not yet arrested anyone in connection with the recovery of the slit-throated body of a schoolgirl in her home in Dhaka’s South Banasree.
The complaint, submitted to court on Sunday, identifies the victim as Fatema Akter Nili, 17.
Although one or more unidentified people are said to be involved, no official suspect has been named so far.
The victim’s family suspects an employee of Nili’s father’s hotel may have been involved in the murder. He was seen entering the house on CCTV before her body was recovered.
Khilgaon Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Abdur Razzak, the investigating officer of the case, said if the person suspected by Nili’s family members is arrested, the murder mystery may be resolved.
The body of Nili, a 10th grader at Radiant School and College, was recovered from her home in South Banasree on Saturday afternoon.
Her family members were not at home at the time of the incident.
Nili’s sister Shobha Akter returned to find her body with her throat slit and informed police.
Nili’s father Md Sajib filed a case in this incident on Saturday night.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Raju Ahmed accepted the case statement on Sunday.
The court has ordered an investigation report to be submitted by Feb 19, said SI Md Marufuzzaman of the prosecution division.
According to the case dossier, Nili’s father owns a restaurant outside their home, and on Jan 7, all family members except Shobha and Nili went to Habiganj.
Nili’s brother Shakil alleged, “In the CCTV video, our hotel employee Milon Hossain was seen entering the house. He killed my sister. He has not been found since then.”
Milon hails from Bagerhat, but Shakil could not specify his village.
SI Razzak said they are looking for Milon.
“A drive has already been conducted at his house in Boro Moghbazar, but he could not be found there.”
“The investigation is ongoing, keeping two factors in mind. The victim is a teenager, and Milon seemed to be a drug addict.
"He may have entered the house with the intent of raping the victim. He possibly failed to rape and killed her.
"He could've also been in a love affair with his sister. This murder may have occurred because [Nili] saw the affair.”
Citing the CCTV footage, he said: “It is certain Milon committed this murder. He is a fugitive.”
“If we can arrest him, the full facts of the case will be revealed. Hopefully, we will be able to arrest him soon.”
