Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed says action will be taken against law enforcers who fail to arrest extortionists, identified criminals and drug dealers “very soon”.
He spoke on Saturday after visiting Professor Md Asadur Rahman, head of Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s ENT department, who is recovering from an Aug 17 attack.
Salahuddin said the assault stemmed from extortion, with an organised gang targeting doctors and other high-profile professionals.
Police have arrested four of seven suspected gang members within two days, he said.
He said the government wants to eliminate organised extortion networks, adding that he had ordered swift action against such criminals in metropolitan areas.
Salahuddin said the gangs seek quick wealth and exploit the names of known criminals and “godfathers”.
He also said authorities are compiling a list of police personnel linked to extortionists.
Asked about cancelled cultural events, he questioned why culture was being linked to extortion.
