Another 174 Bangladeshis who were detained at Libya’s Tajura Detention Centre on allegations of illegal entry have returned home.
They arrived at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 9:45am on Tuesday on a flight operated by Burak Air, a private airline based in Tripoli, according to the foreign ministry.
In a media statement, the ministry said the Bangladeshis returned with the cooperation of the Libyan government and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Bangladesh Embassy in Libya, and the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment.
Most of the returnees had entered Libya illegally after being lured and assisted by human traffickers with the intention of travelling to Europe by sea.
Many of them also alleged that they had been kidnapped and tortured at different times while in Libya.
Officials from the foreign ministry, other relevant ministries and the IOM received the returning Bangladeshis at the airport.
The ministry asked them to share their harrowing experiences with others in order to raise public awareness about the dangers of irregular migration and human trafficking.
The IOM later provided each returnee with travel expenses for the journey home, food supplies, basic medical assistance and temporary accommodation where necessary.
Earlier, on Aug 18, another 174 Bangladeshis who had been detained in Libya’s Benghazi, were repatriated to Bangladesh.
