Police have arrested the father and uncle of an 11-year-old girl whose body was found stuffed inside a sack in the kitchen of a house in Rangabali Upazila of Patuakhali.
Based on a confessional statement given by the uncle in court, police say the girl’s father planned the killing after the child discovered him “molesting a relative”.
The father allegedly arranged for his cousin to kill his own daughter and attempted to dispose of the body.
Rangabali Police chief Md Sirajul Islam said the child’s uncle was arrested on Monday and later confessed to the crime at a Patuakhali court.
The girl’s father was produced in court on Tuesday afternoon and placed in custody to be interrogated for two days, he said.
Police recovered the girl’s body from the kitchen of the house on Sunday evening.
Following the recovery, the victim’s elder sister filed a murder case against their father and uncle.
Officer Sirajul said the postmortem report would answer whether the child had been raped before being killed.
“We are conducting the investigation based on the evidence found in the inquest report and various preliminary indications,” he said.
Quoting the uncle’s statement given in court, Sirajul said the child’s mother lives in Saudi Arabia, while the girl lived at home with her father.
A distant teenage relative was also staying in the house.
“The father became involved in an illicit relationship with the teenage girl, which his daughter came to realise. Recently, the child saw them in a compromising situation,” Sirajul said.
To prevent the matter from being disclosed to the child’s mother and other family members, the father tried to persuade the girl to remain silent.
When he failed to do so, he allegedly planned to kill her, police said.
According to the statement, the father later convinced his cousin, who regularly visited the house for meals, to carry out the killing.
“On Friday evening, the uncle strangled the child to death. Later, the father and uncle together stuffed the body into a sack and tried to dispose of it,” Sirajul said.
He added that the father also attempted to mislead investigators by filing a general diary (GD) with the police, claiming his daughter had gone missing.
When they failed to dispose of the body, the sack was kept in a corner of the kitchen.
Sirajul added that police later recovered the body during the course of the investigation.
