A bus driver has been killed and at least 20 passengers, including the driver of the other bus, have been injured in a head-on collision between two buses in Bahubal Upazila of Habiganj.

The accident occurred around 8:30am on Wednesday in front of the Akij Venture Company near Dubai Bazar on the Dhaka–Sylhet Highway, said Shubho Ranjan Chakma, chief of Shayestaganj Highway Police Station.

The deceased was the driver of the Unique Paribahan bus. Police, however, have not yet been able to confirm his identity.

Citing locals, police said the accident happened when a Unique Paribahan bus travelling from Sylhet to Dhaka reached near Dubai Bazar and collided head-on with a Lucky Paribahan bus travelling in the opposite direction from Dhaka to Sylhet.

The impact caused the Unique Paribahan bus to lose control, veer off the highway, and fall into a roadside ditch. Meanwhile, the Lucky Paribahan bus was badly crushed.

The driver of the Unique Paribahan bus died at the scene. The driver of the Lucky Paribahan bus and at least 20 passengers from both buses sustained serious injuries.

Local residents, members of the Bahubal Fire Service, and Shayestaganj Highway Police rescued the injured and transported them to Habiganj District Sadar Hospital and other nearby hospitals for treatment.

Shubho Ranjan said traffic on the Dhaka–Sylhet Highway remained suspended for about an hour following the accident.

Normal traffic resumed after the damaged Lucky Paribahan bus was removed from the road.

He added that police are continuing efforts to identify the deceased bus driver.
