July Memorial monument set on fire in Pirojpur, two police officers withdrawn

The incident has occurred in the wee hours of Saturday

A memorial monument built for the martyrs of the July-August student movement in Pirojpur has been set on fire.

The July Memorial monument located in the Shaheed Minar premises in the district town was set on fire early Saturday night. A part of the monument has turned black.

Soon after the incident, two policemen patrolling the area were withdrawn to the police lines, said district police Superintendent Khan Muhammad Abu Naser.

He said the arson case is being processed at Pirojpur Sadar Police Station and will be thoroughly investigated, with the strictest legal action taken against those involved.

The two withdrawn policemen will also face legal action, he added.

Students and members of the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami have demanded justice in the incident.

Another July Martyrs’ Memorial monument near Barguna Circuit House and the Liberation War Martyrs’ monument was set on fire around 1:15am on Thursday, said Sadar Police chief Md Yakub Hossain.
