Diligent and round-the-clock policing has “significantly improved” the state of law and order in the capital, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali has said.
Speaking at the DMP headquarters on Monday, he said incidents of mugging and extortion had dropped markedly.
The coordination meeting focused on the law and order situation, steps to ensure smooth travel for passengers, safe Eid prayers and traffic management.
“The DMP has taken all sorts of precautions to ensure Eid-ul-Fitr is celebrated in a festive and safe atmosphere. Alongside policing measures, security awareness is needed at the individual and organisational level as well.”
“If someone drives a car towards oncoming traffic or a motorcycle on a sidewalk, we have to take legal action against them,” he added.
Mohammad Shahidullah, joint commissioner (operations) of the DMP, presented the overall security plan at the meeting, while representatives of other organisations voiced their opinions in an open discussion.
