Police have sought permission to question a Dhaka University teacher in custody over allegations of abetment in the suicide of a female student.

Sub-Inspector Kazi Iqbal Hossain of Badda Police Station, investigating officer, filed a petition on Wednesday requesting three days to grill Sudip Chakroborthy.

The associate professor from the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies currently remains behind bars after a court previously rejected his bail application.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam has scheduled a hearing for Sunday to decide on the interrogation plea in the presence of the suspect.

SI Kamal Hossain of the Prosecution Division confirmed the date on Thursday, noting the court will weigh the necessity of further questioning.

The case stems from the death of Munira Mahzabin Mimo, a 2019–20 academic session student of the same department, who was found hanging at her family home in Badda on Sunday morning.

She was taken to hospital where doctors declared her dead. A note was recovered from her room.

It started, "Sudip sir must be paid Tk 50,000.”

It then wished Sudip and a classmate well.

“Return the gifts given by sir..."

Mimo’s father Golam Mostofa filed a case on the same day, accusing Sudip Chakroborthy of abetment to suicide.

Following the complaint, the teacher was produced before court, where he was sent to jail after his bail plea was rejected.
