A man has been shot after attackers entered his home in the Moynarbag Bou Bazar area behind Hossain Market in Dhaka’s Badda.
The 35-year-old victim has been identified by a single name as Rana. He is currently in critical condition and undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The shooting took place around 10pm on Saturday. He was later rescued and taken to DMCH around 2am, said Inspector Habibur Rahman, chief of the hospital’s police outpost.
Habibur said Rana is receiving treatment in Ward 4 of the emergency department.
Rana works as a driver and hails from Maijdee, Noakhali.
Rana, who was shot in the leg, said that on Saturday he had gone to his younger brother’s home in North Badda for a visit and later returned to his own home and went to sleep. Another acquaintance, a man named Joy, was also staying at the house.
“Around 10pm, someone knocked on the door. Someone inside asked, ‘Who is it?’ but there was no response from outside. I was lying in bed. Joy Bhai, who was staying at my house, then opened the door. When he did not see anyone, he went toward the main entrance.
“Just then, Tamim and two other men suddenly entered through the door. They started hurling abusive language at me and shot me in my right leg. The bullet struck just above my right knee. They fled immediately after shooting me.”
The accused Tamim is a local resident.
Rana’s relatives allege that Tamim had been regularly demanding extortion money from a business owned by Rana’s elder brother. They suspect the shooting may have been connected to the dispute.
