Election Commission sets Aug 31 for final voter list before local government elections

Citizens born on or before Jul 31, 2008 and registered by Jul 31 this year will be included

The Election Commission (EC) is going to publish the updated final voter list on Aug 31 as it prepares for the next round of local government elections.

On Thursday, the commission set Jul 31, 2008 as the eligibility cut-off date and instructed local election and registration officials to begin the update process.

The draft voter list will be published on Aug 9.

Claims, objections and correction requests may be filed until Aug 24, with disposal by Aug 27 and decisions entered by Aug 28.

Officials have also been directed to publicise the draft list through mosques, temples, local journalists and cable operators to encourage public scrutiny.

The EC is preparing for phased local elections from October, with polls due for 4,581 union councils, 61 district councils, 495 Upazila councils, 330 municipalities and 13 city corporations.
