At least three people have died after suffering burn injuries while while a house was being set ablaze over the rape and murder of a teenage girl in Pabna Sadar Upazila.
Two of them died at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka on Tuesday morning while the third had died at the same hospital on Monday afternoon, said Pabna Sadar Police Station chief Tariqul Islam.
The dead were identified as Suman Sheikh, 35, Saiful Islam Sabbir, 28, and Sapu, 45.
All were day labourers and were present at the scene either as bystanders or attempting to put out the fire.
Police and witnesses said the body of a 15-year-old girl was recovered in a sack from the Padma River in Sadar Upazila on Wednesday afternoon.
After the postmortem examination the next day, the body was buried.
Soon after the burial, locals staged protests demanding capital punishment for those involved in the incident.
At one point, angry crowds set fire to the houses of the suspects.
Shortly after the fire was set, a cooking gas cylinder inside one of the houses exploded, causing the flames to spread rapidly.
Several people were burnt in the incident.
Locals rescued the injured and took them to Pabna General Hospital.
As their condition worsened, they were later shifted to the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute in Dhaka, where they died.
Police said the night before the girl’s body was recovered, four men were seen moving around the Padma River in a car.
Police later arrested three people over the incident, including the victim’s alleged boyfriend Naim, identified with a single name.
They allegedly confessed during primary questioning to raping the girl and later killing her by strangling her.
