Tribunal hands death penalty to 3, life in prison to 6 over Rajbari village doctor's murder

A former union chairman is among those given life imprisonment

A tribunal has sentenced three people to death and six others, including a former union chairman, to life imprisonment for the killing of village doctor Rezaul Karim, aka Abu Doctor, in Rajbari’s Goalanda nearly seven years ago.

Judge Md Rahibul Islam of Dhaka’s Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 delivered the verdict on Tuesday, according to court bench assistant Shamsuddin Jummon.

The three condemned convicts are Bablu Sardar, Tekon Sardar and Gaziar Sarkar.

Those handed life sentences are former Debugram Union chairman Atar Ali Chairman, Raihan Sardar, Habibur Rahman alias Hobi Sardar, Helal Khan, Zillur Rahman and Zia Mondal.

The tribunal acquitted 12 others after charges against them could not be proven.
