Inspector General of Police Ali Hossain Fakir has pledged zero tolerance for any wrongdoing, saying there will be no compromise on security during the Eid travel period.

The police chief made the remarks on Tuesday after visiting the Gabtoli Bus Terminal, as the seven-day Eid holiday began.

He said that while there is no specific threat surrounding the Eid journeys, police remain on high alert as criminal activity typically increases during the period.

“We do not have any information about any threat. Since the activities of criminals, including robbers, increase around the Eid journey, the police have stepped up their activity,” he said.

“Still, I want to convey the message that Bangladesh Police are active. There is no compromise with any unwanted incident or injustice.”

Highlighting preparations to ensure a smooth journey for people travelling home, the IGP said all units of the police have been mobilised.

“Not only the traffic police, but all units have been given necessary instructions. This time, officers and forces of all units will be in the field to make the Eid journey smooth and comfortable,” he said.

He noted that travellers often face significant difficulties during Eid journeys, including long delays on roads.

“Many people leave the day before Eid but fail to reach home on time and cannot celebrate Eid properly,” he said.

To address these issues, he said coordinated efforts are under way with relevant ministries to prevent passenger harassment, control ticket prices, avoid road obstructions and reduce traffic congestion.

Referring to the presence of ticket counters across Dhaka, the IGP said this has reduced passenger pressure at terminals.

“I have said that there will no longer be any long-distance counters within Dhaka city. However, everyone’s cooperation will be needed to remove them,” he added.
