A court has granted bail to Abu Saleh Musa, the husband of showbiz personality and model Sanayee Mahbob, in a case accusing him of demanding dowry, as well as physical and emotional abuse.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbubur Rahman issued the order on Tuesday after he surrendered before the court.
Khorshed Alam, former president of Dhaka Bar Association, represented Musa in court.
During the hearing, he told the court: “The court took the case into consideration and issued a summons against the suspect. He has surrendered in line with the court's order. We submitted a bond that they want to continue as a family. We’ll reach a compromise soon.”
Objecting to the bail petition, Sanayee’s counsel, Mithun Saha, told the court:
“Beyond demanding dowry, the defendant also took Tk 1.9 million from the plaintiff. What about that money? He took it and then demanded dowry. That is clearly a crime.”
In response, defence lawyer Khorhed said: “This is a matter that will be determined at trial.”
The court then questioned Musa, who expressed his intention to continue the marriage. A tearful Sanayee also presented her side of the story.
After hearing from both parties, the judge observed that the case could be resolved mutually, and as the defendant wished to continue as a family, he ought to be given a chance to do so.
Later, the court granted bail to Musa on the condition that he works to resolve the dispute, according to Advocate Mithun.
“We’ll sit to discuss the issue next Tuesday,” he said.
The complaint was filed at the court by Sanayee on Aug 6. A summons was subsequently issued for Musa's attendance in court. He complied and was granted bail.
The complaint notes that the couple tied the knot on May 27, 2022. At the time of the wedding, Sanayee's family gave her various pieces of furniture and 174.9 grams of gold jewellery as gifts.
Later, Musa asked for money, saying that he would use it to start a business alongside his job. At his insistence, Sanayee gave him Tk 1.2 million of her own money and another Tk 700,000 from her father.
However, after spending that money, Musa later demanded Tk 2.2 million in dowry from Sanayee, according to the filing. When she refused to pay, he allegedly abused her physically and emotionally. He even threatened to break off their marriage if she did not pay up.
Sanayee said she tried to save her marriage and resolve the issue several times by involving the families and members of society.
However, her husband continued to ask for Tk 2.2 million. In a bid to continue as a family, she sent legal notices to Musa on Jul 7 and Jul 22. Despite receiving the notice, Musa went to Sanayee’s house in Aftabnagar and threatened to end the marriage if he was not paid the money.
Sanayee began her career in showbiz with a role in the film "Bhalobasa 24×7", directed by Gazi Mahbub.
She later grabbed headlines after facing police questioning on several occasions and went on to become a social media sensation.
