Two children have drowned while picking water lilies from a fish enclosure in Bagerhat’s Mollahat Upazila.
They two were cousins.
The incident occurred on Sunday morning in Dariyala village of Gangni Union, said Prosen Kumar Sana, a sub-inspector from Mollahat Police Station.
The dead were identified as Lamia Akter Jannati, 10, daughter of Mostain Sheikh, and Samia, 9, daughter of Mostak Sheikh, both from Dariyala village.
They were reportedly students in first grade at the local Dariyala Government Primary School.
“Around 7am, after waking up, the two cousins, Lamia and Samia, went to a fish enclosure near their home to pick water lilies without informing anyone. They drowned there. Neither of them knew how to swim,” SI Prosen said, citing local residents.
“Initially, it is believed that one of them fell into the water while trying to pick a water lily, and the other tried to rescue her. At that point, both may have drowned.”
He said, “Around 8am, a neighbour went to the fish enclosure and first saw the body of Samia floating in the water and informed her family members. After hearing the news, the family realised that Lamia was not at home and began searching for her in the water of the enclosure.
“After some time, Lamia was recovered unconscious from the water. The two children were then taken to Mollahat Upazila Health Complex, where the attending physician declared them dead.”
Citing locals, the SI further said, “As the two cousins were close in age, they always played together. Such incidents happen because of negligence and lack of awareness among family members.”
He said police handed over the bodies to the families without postmortems as the relatives had no objection.
