BNP leader Sarwar Alamgir has been sworn in as the member of parliament for the Chattogram-2 constituency, nearly five months after the general election, following the resolution of a legal dispute over his candidacy.

Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad administered the oath to Sarwar around 7:15pm on Thursday at the Speaker's Office in the parliament.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman attended the ceremony, while Parliament Secretary Md Golam Sarwar Bhuiyan conducted the proceedings.

Earlier in the day, the Election Commission published the official gazette declaring Sarwar elected from Chattogram-2 after receiving the High Court's verdict.

Following publication of the gazette, the EC Secretariat sent a letter to the Parliament Secretariat requesting arrangements for the newly elected lawmaker to take the oath of office.

Sarwar Alamgir was elected from Chattogram-2 as the BNP candidate in the parliamentary election held on Feb 12.

However, the publication of his election result had remained suspended because of legal complications surrounding the validity of his candidacy.

On Thursday, a High Court bench comprising Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Md Asif Hasan ruled that Sarwar's nomination had been valid.

The ruling removed the legal obstacle that had prevented the Election Commission from publishing the election gazette and cleared the way for him to assume office as a member of parliament.
