The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested Shahbagh Thana BNP leader Khwaja Habibullah Habib in connection with the stabbing death of former Ramna Thana Swechchhasebak Dal convenor Billal Hossain Talukder.
He was arrested in Dhaka’s Lalbagh on Thursday night, said DB Additional Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam.
Habib is a former councillor of Ward 21 of the Dhaka South City Corporation.
“Although Habib is not a named suspect in the complaint, he was arrested because his name came up during the investigation,” Shafiqul said on Friday.
Previously police had arrested nine people in this incident, including the expelled general secretary of Ramna Thana Jubo Dal Lutfar Rahman Patwari, Joint Convenor Rezaul Karim, and Ward No. 19 (Ramna) Chhatra Dal leader Istiak Ali Rakib alias Golden Rakib.
However, police have yet to arrest the main murder suspect, expelled Ramna Thana Jubo Dal convenor Didarul Islam Babu, as he is on anticipatory bail.
Billal was the convenor of Ward No. 19 of Ramna Thana Swecchasebak Dal. He was arrested over attack and vandalism at the Sohag Paribahan office in Malibagh in September, and was later expelled from the organisation.
On Jun 8, around 8pm, he was summoned to an area Anarkali Market in Mouchak with promises of arbitration and stabbed to death.
The next day, his wife Ambia Khatun filed a case at Ramna Model Police Station, naming 21 people and seven to eight unidentified people.
The case alleges that Billal, who was in the food and hotel business, was called near Anarkali Market by Babu to discuss a dispute involving Billal's nephew Mobarak Hossain Akash.
Around 8pm, Babu and other suspects allegedly assaulted Billal after a scuffle over alleged extortion, and Riazul stabbed Billal in the chest, while Akash was also beaten and injured.
The suspects fled after locals responded to Akash's cries for help.
Billal was taken to Islami Bank Medical College Hospital and later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he was pronounced dead around 9:15pm.
