A 3-year-old girl has died after choking on a peanut that became lodged in her airway in Sherpur's Nalitabari.

The incident occurred in the municipal town on Tuesday afternoon, according to Tanvir Ibne Kader, a doctor at Nalitabari Upazila Health Complex.

The child, identified as Manha Moni, was the daughter of bank official Md Rubel and a resident of Sylhet.

She had travelled to her maternal grandparents' home with her family.

Her maternal grandfather Mostafa Ahmed lives in Byaparipara in Arai Ani Bazar of Nalitabari Municipality and is the head teacher of Tantor Government Primary School.

Family members said Manha had accompanied her grandfather to the school on Tuesday morning.

She was given peanuts there at lunchtime, but one became lodged in her airway, leaving her struggling to breathe.

Her grandfather rushed her to the hospital, but she died on the way.

Dr Tanvir said the child had died before reaching the health facility.
