Six people, including a schoolboy, have been killed and five others injured in four road accidents on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway in Cumilla.
The crashes took place mostly due to reckless driving in Daudkandi, Nimsar, Chandina and Miah Bazar in the span of several hours since the early hours on Wednesday, say Highway Police.
Daudkandi Highway Police chief Md Iqbal Bahar said two people died after a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw collided head-on with an unidentified vehicle in the Upazila’s Kanra soon after sunrise.
The victims are Barek, 42, and Mostafa, 40, both identified by single names and hailing from the Upazila.
They died on the spot. Four other people injured in the accident were rushed to local hospitals.
The auto-rickshaw carrying six passengers was on the wrong side of the road, the police officer said.
Meanwhile, Moynamoti Highway Police said the drivers of two vehicles were killed on the spot after a truck hit a covered van at a U-turn near Nimsar Bazar around 3:45am.
Police identified them as Mohammad Zahirul Islam alias Main, 27, a resident of Noakhali, and Md Sohel Rana, 35, hailing from Meherpur.
The accident, which also injured another person, occurred on the Dhaka-bound lane of the highway, said police.
In Chandina Upazila, ninth-grader Ibne Taim was killed after a Chattogram-bound lorry ran him over as he was crossing the road in Katherpul around 9:30am.
Moynamoti Highway Police said the boy was returning home from a coaching centre.
He was declared dead after being rushed to a local hospital. Locals seized the lorry following the accident.
In Miah Bazar, a covered van driver died instantly after a speeding unidentified vehicle ran him over around 10am.
Prior to the accident, Omar Faruq had been signalling other transports for help after his vehicle broke down, police said.
All six bodies were handed over to their families.
