Students of Jahangirnagar University have seized 28 buses of Rajdhani Paribahan on the Dhaka-Aricha highway after a female student was allegedly pushed off a moving bus by a staff member.
The incident took place around 7:30pm on Tuesday near the university’s main gate, according to a post made by the victim in a Facebook group called "Amrai Jahangirnagar".
The victim, a fourth-year public administration student, said she was returning from tuition when she boarded a Rajdhani Paribahan bus at the Savar Thana Stand.
As she was getting on, the driver’s assistant asked her destination. When she replied “Jahangirnagar University,” he allegedly shoved her off the bus while it was still moving.
She later sought treatment at the university’s medical centre and reported injuries to her leg.
“I was pushed off the bus and hurt my leg. I want justice,” the student said.
The incident quickly sparked anger on campus. Around 8pm, students intercepted 28 buses belonging to Rajdhani Paribahan.
They said the buses were seized to demand compensation for her treatment and to hold those responsible accountable.
They also demanded that the bus helper who pushed her be punished and issue an apology. They also called for the transport company to provide a written assurance that such incidents would not happen again.
Jahangirnagar University Proctor Prof AKM Rashidul Alam condemned the incident as “extremely reprehensible”.
The proctor said that bus owners were expected to meet university authorities on Wednesday to discuss the matter and that “necessary measures” would be taken.
