Police have told a Dhaka court that Bangabandhu Foundation President Mozammel Haque financed an egg attack on National Citizen Party leader Akhter Hossen, who travelled to the United States with Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus.
Investigation officer Sub-Inspector Abdus Salam made the claim during a remand hearing at the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah on Thursday.
Police sought 10 days to grill Mozammel and Awami League’s former Narail-1 MP Kabirul Haque Mukti in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Gulshan Police. The two were produced before the court around 2:45pm.
Presenting his arguments, SI Salam told the court: “The accused are organisers of all Awami League programmes. Mozammel sent money through a mobile financial service for the egg attack on Akhter in New York. Their activities are aimed at destabilising the country, disrupting law and order, and spreading unrest.”
Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi backed the remand plea, telling the court the two men had created WhatsApp and Messenger groups for “anti-government coordination”.
“Mukti played a behind-the-scenes role. Police had been working to identify them, and they have now been arrested,” he added.
He also told the court, “Mukti is a member of an illegal parliament. He is a collaborator of ‘fascist’ forces. In New York, along with leaders from three political parties who accompanied Muhammad Yunus, he attempted to harass, defame, and insult the delegation. Akhter was targeted in an egg attack. Mozammel was involved, both in coordination and funding.”
Defending Mukti, lawyer Jahangir Alam sought cancellation of the remand and applied for bail.
“It’s being claimed that Chhatra League is involved in anti-terrorism activities. But my client is 60 years old -- well past student age.
“If questioning is necessary, it can be done at the jail gate. He is physically unfit to be taken into remand.”
Another lawyer Jony Sikder referred to the egg attack and said: “We had no tradition of egg throwing in Bangladesh. Now it has reached New York. Even judges and pro-liberation figures have been attacked with eggs in our court premises.”
In reply, Prosecutor Faruqi said: “If we, the prosecution, had not protected against egg attacks, people would have taken Dipu Moni from Chandpur and Salman F Rahman from Dohar.
“For 16 years they oppressed people, denied votes, carried out enforced disappearances, murders, and abductions. As a result, they received eggs in return. We risked our lives to protect against egg attacks.”
Mozammel appeared without a lawyer but addressed the court with permission. “I am more than 70 years old, suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure, and other illnesses. Since the 5th of August last year, I have not been involved in politics.
“For the sake of survival, I request cancellation of remand,” he said.
He added: “My health is in critical condition. Please let me live, give me a chance to survive. I will be grateful. If necessary, I will stay at Gulshan Police Station.”
After hearing all parties, the court approved six days of police custody for Mozammel and Mukti.
