Two workers have been killed after a crane cable snapped during unloading operations on the banks of the Shitalakshya River in Narayanganj’s Rupganj.
The incident occurred in Ganganagar of Murapara Union at a river terminal used for handling Tricom Group’s cargo.
The victims have been identified as Al-Amin, 32, and Al-Amin Mia, 26. Both hailed from the Tarash Upazila of Sirajganj district.
Rupganj Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Sadekur Rahman said the accident took place while the crane was being used to unload wheat from a vessel.
"Three workers were stationed directly beneath the crane. Suddenly, the cable snapped, causing the heavy grab to fall on them," the SI said, quoting witnesses.
One worker died instantly at the scene, while the second succumbed to his injuries while being rushed to the hospital, he added.
The river jetty’s supervisor Mohammad Omar Faruq said they were contacting the families of the victims.
Sadekur said legal action would be initiated after a thorough investigation into the incident.
