The High Court has granted bail to former railway minister Nurul Islam Sujan in three murder cases, including one linked to the killing of a man during clashes in Jatrabari amid the July Uprising.
A bench of Justice AKM Zahirul Huq and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher issued the order on Tuesday.
Lawyer Motahar Hossain Saju, appearing for Sujan, said: “I argued Sujan’s cases. He has been granted bail [on Tuesday] in three murder cases.”
Case records show that on Jul 18, 2024, during peaceful protests in Jatrabari, Rafiqul Islam was shot dead in clashes with police.
His wife later filed a murder case naming 298 people, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
On Sep 17 that year, a court had earlier granted a three-day remand for Sujan in another Jatrabari case.
However, the order was later cancelled the same day as a bail petition was pending before the High Court.
Later that day, the investigating officer sought a 10-day remand in the Rafiqul murder case, along with Sujan’s arrest in the case.
Judge Shaheen Reza approved the arrest plea and sent him to jail, fixing Sep 22 for the remand hearing.
Sujan was arrested on Sep 16 from Bangladesh Specialized Hospital in Shyamoli, Dhaka, by Jatrabari police.
