Faisal Karim Masud’s parents, Humayun Kabir and Hasi Begum, have confessed in court to assisting their son following the attempted assassination of Inqilab Moncho leader Sharif Osman bin Hadi.
On Wednesday, Inspector Faysal Ahmed of the Detective Branch’s Motijheel zonal team presented the two suspects in the court.
The accused agreed to provide confessional statements, said Prosecution Police Sub-Inspector Rokonuzzaman, leading the investigation officer to seek the court’s permission to record them. They were later sent to jail.
The application to record the confessional statements said, “The suspects are aware of crucial details of the case. CCTV footage shows they assisted the main suspect [Faisal] and his accomplice in fleeing and hiding the weapon used before and after the incident.
“They have agreed to give voluntary confessions, which we request to be recorded.”
The court also granted a three-day police custody for interrogation of Mufti Nuruzzaman Nomani, a car rental businessman who allegedly provided the microbus used by Faisal.
These developments follow a string of court orders, including a seven-day remand for Faisal’s associate, known only as Kabir, on Tuesday.
On Monday, investigators were given five days to question Faisal’s wife Shaheda Parveen Samia, his brother-in-law Wahid Ahmed Shipu, and a close friend, Maria Akter Lima.
Mohammad Abdul Hannan, believed to be the owner of the motorcycle used in the shooting, was ordered to face three days of police questioning on Sunday.
The attempted killing case was filed on Sunday night at Paltan Police Station by Inqilab Moncho Member Secretary Abdullah Al Jaber.
Hadi, who rose to prominence during the July Uprising and the movement to ban the Awami League, had announced plans to contest in the parliamentary election as an independent candidate from the Dhaka-8 constituency. He was attacked on Friday while campaigning at Bijoynagar.
While Hadi was riding in a moving rickshaw, an assailant seated on the back of a moving motorcycle shot him, with the bullet striking his head.
Gravely wounded, Hadi was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he underwent surgery, before being transferred later that night to Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. Doctors described his condition as extremely critical.
On Monday afternoon, Hadi was flown to Singapore by air ambulance for advanced treatment.
