Three people have been killed and five others, including a police officer, injured in separate road accidents in Jamalpur.
Jamalpur Sadar Police Station chief Abu Faisal Md Atik said one person was killed on the Jamalpur-Tangail road on Friday night, while two others died in a separate crash on the Jamalpur-Mymensingh road early on Saturday.
The dead were identified as truck driver Jewel Akhand Kalu from Chanakanda in Jamalpur municipality, Shawon Islam from Simarpar in Bakshiganj, and businessman Anchu Khan from Madhur Bazar.
Senior Station Officer Rabiul Islam of Jamalpur Fire Service said Jewel was cleaning his truck by the roadside at Chanakanda on the Jamalpur-Mymensingh Highway when another truck, travelling from Jamalpur to Nandina, hit his stationary vehicle.
He died on the spot, while three others, including the driver of the moving truck, were injured. The crash caused traffic congestion on both sides of the road.
At the same time, a motorcycle headed towards Mymensingh from Jamalpur crashed into a stationary stone-laden truck.
The rider, Shawon, died at the scene, while the pillion passenger was injured.
Fire service personnel rushed to the scene and took the injured to Jamalpur General Hospital, Rabiul said.
Although police seized the truck involved in the Chanakanda crash, the driver managed to flee.
In a separate incident, businessman Anchu was fatally run over by a truck while crossing the road at Narikeli on the Jamalpur-Tangail Highway at midnight.
Meanwhile, at the Jamtali Bazar checkpoint on the same road, a pickup van ignored a police signal and ran over Sub-Inspector Gopal Chandra Ghosh of the Narayanpur Investigation Centre before speeding towards Jamalpur from Madhupur.
The injured policeman is currently undergoing treatment at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
OC Abu Faisal said that while police managed to seize the truck involved in the Chanakanda accident, the drivers of the trucks in the Narikeli and Jamtali incidents fled with their vehicles.
