The Foundation for Human Rights Culture has expressed “condemnation, anger and deep concern” over the death of BNP leader Shamsuzzaman Dablu following his detention during an operation in Jibannagar Upazila, Chuadanga.
The organisation, widely known as Manabadhikar Shongskriti Foundation (MSF), urged authorities to take the allegation seriously, calling for an immediate, impartial investigation to establish the circumstances of his death and ensure appropriate action.
Shamsuzzaman, 55, served as the general secretary of Jibannagar unit of the party and was the son of the late Ataur Rahman.
According to family members and police, Shamsuzzaman was detained by Army personnel around 10:30pm on Monday in front of his medicine shop, Hafiza Pharmacy.
He was taken to the BNP office behind the shop for questioning before being brought to Jibannagar Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead at 11:30pm.
Locals said protests erupted outside the health complex after news of his death spread. Army personnel were reportedly trapped inside and had to close the hospital gate.
BNP leaders and activists staged demonstrations, setting fire to objects outside the hospital, alleging that Shamsuzzaman had been beaten, leading to his death, and demanding punishment for those responsible.
Chuadanga Superintendent of Police Mohammad Monirul Islam told bdnews24.com in the afternoon that the Army conducted the raid without police involvement and that police were only informed after the body was brought to the hospital.
He and the deputy commissioner visited the site and inspected the scene.
The Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) described the incident as “unintended, regrettable and unacceptable”.
The camp commander and all participating Army personnel have been withdrawn to the cantonment.
MSF called the allegation of death in custody “an extreme human rights violation” and demanded a thorough investigation, noting that protecting anyone in state custody is the legal duty of law enforcement.
ISPR has announced the formation of a senior-level investigation committee to uncover the facts. The office confirmed that anyone found responsible will face action under military law.
