A man has been killed and at least eight others have been injured in an attack by two rival sides over control of a market under construction in Sreenagar Upazila of Munshiganj.

The incident took place on Tuesday morning in front of the under-construction Tomi Market at Balashur Bazar, said Sreenagar Police Station chief Md Jewel Miah.

The deceased was identified as Md Alamgir, 50, a resident of the Balashur area.

Among the injured were his brother Tamizuddin, 65, Jahangir, 55, Tarek, 35, Tushar, 24, and Abdur Rahman, 23.

The identities of several other victims could not be immediately confirmed.

Police and local residents said Alamgir and Tamizuddin had jointly begun construction of the market on the disputed land.

However, local men identified as Hannan Haji, Manik and Taposh later filed a case in court, claiming ownership of the property.

After failing to secure a favourable verdict, the opposing group allegedly attempted to seize control of the market by force.

Witnesses said Hannan and Manik arrived at the site with several associates on Tuesday morning and tried to occupy the structure.

When Alamgir attempted to resist, he was hacked and beaten, sustaining critical injuries.

As family members rushed to intervene, they too were assaulted.

While the injured were being taken to the Sreenagar Upazila Health Complex, Alamgir was attacked again in front of the hospital gate.

He later died while undergoing treatment.

Following the killing, relatives of the deceased and local residents staged a protest, blocking the Dhaka–Dohar road at around 11am.

Traffic on both sides of the highway came to a halt, causing severe disruption.

During the demonstration, protesters reportedly set fire to property in front of Hannan Haji’s market in the Balashur area, triggering panic among residents.

Members of the Army, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and police rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control.

Traffic movement resumed after about an hour.

OC Jewel said the murder stemmed from a land dispute.

“We have received a complaint. Efforts are underway to arrest those involved,” he said, adding that the situation had returned to normal.
