A clash between the “Raju group” and the “Belcha Monir group” in Dhaka’s Adabor has left a man dead after he was hacked with a machete.

The 35-year-old victim identified with a single name Ripon, also known as Nipu, was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 6am on Tuesday following the incident.

He died while undergoing treatment at the hospital at 7pm, police said.

Assistant Commissioner Mehedi Hasan of the Mohammadpur Zone said the fight broke out between members of the Raju group from Ward No. 17 and the Belcha Monir group from Ward No. 10.

“During the clash, Ripon -- a cousin of Raju -- was attacked with a machete by members of the opposing group. Locals rescued him and took him to hospital, but he later died,” he added.

“Both groups are involved in drug dealings,” the officer said. “Initial findings suggest the clash was fuelled by a turf rivalry.”

Legal action over the incident is in progress, he added.
