Protesters have blocked the Dhaka–Mymensingh Highway at different points in Gazipur in phases, demanding the arrest of those responsible for the death of Inqilab Moncho Convenor Sharif Osman bin Hadi.

The protests have taken place at several locations, including Chandana intersection, Tongi, and Sreepur, disrupting traffic and causing inconvenience to commuters and residents.

In the morning, hundreds of students and locals blocked a section of the highway at Chandana intersection and staged demonstrations.

After Jummah prayers, people from all walks of life joined the protest, blocking the road again and holding a sit-in.

A separate protest was also held in Sreepur, where demonstrators blocked the highway and reiterated their demand for the immediate arrest of those involved in Hadi’s death.

Gazipur Metropolitan Police’s Bason Police Station chief Md Harun Or Rashid said protesters blocked the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway at Chandana intersection from 10:30am to 11:30am, causing severe traffic disruption and long tailbacks.

He said the protest resumed after prayers as people from nearby mosques joined in, with the blockade continuing until around 3:45pm.

Police have been deployed at key points to prevent any untoward incident.

Meanwhile, tension has spread in the Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology area following Hadi’s death.

Hundreds of students, under the banner of various organisations including Inqilab Moncho, brought out a procession from the campus and marched towards Shibbari, where they blocked the road and staged a sit-in.

Traffic on the Dhaka–Shimultali road came to a halt as a result.

In Tongi, students and people from different professions blocked the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway near the College Gate area on the same demand, triggering long traffic jams on both sides of the road and adding to public suffering.

Protests have continued in different parts of the city since news of Hadi’s death spread on Thursday night, with the situation remaining tense across Gazipur.
