A leader of the National Citizen Party (NCP) has been arrested in a rape case filed by a college student, who alleged that he made a physical relationship with her after luring her with a promise of marriage.
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested him from Chattogram's Halishahar area on Wednesday night and handed him over to Chandgaon Police Station.
The arrestee, Aftab Majumdar Joy, is a member of the convening committee of the Chattogram metropolitan unit of the NCP. He is a resident of the Wireless Murgi Farm area under Khulshi Police Station.
Chandgaon Police chief Jasim Uddin told bdnews24.com that a young woman filed the rape case against Joy on Jul 19. "RAB arrested him in connection with the case and handed him over to the police station at night," he said.
According to the case filed by the student of a private college in Chattogram, she became acquainted with Aftab through Facebook about three months ago. Their communication later developed into a romantic relationship.
The complainant alleged that on Jul 14, Joy persuaded her to leave home on the pretext of marrying her.
He then took her to a residential hotel in the Bahaddarhat area under Chandgaon Police Station, where he had a physical relationship with her. When she later urged him to proceed with the marriage, Joy allegedly cut off all communication.
Contacted by bdnews24.com, Chattogram metropolitan NCP spokesperson Ridwan Hridoy said: "We have learned about the matter and are looking into it.
"However, there are some questions regarding the case. The alleged incident is said to have taken place on the 14th, and the case was filed within two to three days. Considering all these aspects, we are examining the matter."
