Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has reviewed the progress of the government's Family Card expansion programme, urging officials to build a credible and accurate database to ensure the benefits reach the intended recipients.

The review meeting was held at the Cabinet Division in the Secretariat on Monday afternoon, according to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).

Presided over by the prime minister, the meeting discussed the expansion plan and implementation strategy for the Family Card programme.

Tarique stressed the need for a realistic, phased expansion plan, the best use of modern technology, and effective coordination among all ministries and agencies.

According to the PMO, he instructed officials to develop a reliable and acceptable database so that Family Card benefits can be delivered to “genuine beneficiaries in an effective, transparent, and accurate manner”.

He also directed the authorities to ensure the highest standards of transparency and accountability at every stage of data collection, verification, and beneficiary selection.

After assuming office, Tarique launched the Family Card programme as part of his election pledge.

Meanwhile, State Minister for Social Welfare Farzana Sharmin has expressed hope that full-scale distribution of Family Cards across the country will begin in October after the completion of household census data collection and verification.

Speaking during the recently concluded session of parliament, she said the programme aims to provide Family Cards to at least 8,000 families in every Upazila. The government has also set a target of issuing 4.1 million new Family Cards in the current fiscal year.
