The workers have blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway for two hours protesting the death of a female garment labourer who was hit by a car in Gazipur's Bagher Bazaar area.
Police claimed that the brickbats hurled by the workers during the protest had injured six of its members.
The deceased has been identified with a single name Sabina, a worker of the city’s Golden Refit Garments Ltd.
She died after being run over by a private car while crossing the road on Monday evening.
Joydebpur Police Station chief Abdul Halim said police went to the scene after the worker’s death was reported and brought the situation under control.
The protesters there were asked to leave the road.
"But some outsiders accompanying the workers said they would not leave the highway. At one point, the agitated workers started pelting brickbats at police and vehicles on the highway. Six police officers were injured."
He said, "Later, police used tear shells to remove the workers and traffic on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway returned to normal around 8:45pm.
“Police and army personnel have been deployed on the spot."
