Police have restrained Bangladesh Chhatra League leader Tarikul Islam Tarek from shouting “Joy Bangla” while being taken from court to jail after a remand hearing over the killing of a BNP activist.
He was stopped from shouting the slogan twice at the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court premises on Monday.
Tarek was produced before Metropolitan Magistrate Saifuzzaman for hearing in the 2022 case filed by Paltan Police over the killing of Mokbul Hossain.
After the hearing, the judge placed him in police custody for one day.
As a police officer escorted him out, Tarek raised the slogan “Joy Bangla” in front of journalists. But the officer immediately covered his mouth.
He was then returned to the dock, fitted with a helmet, bulletproof vest, and handcuffs, and transferred to jail. During the transfer, he again attempted to speak and shout slogans, which police prevented by covering his mouth again.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Ruknuzzaman of the prosecution said Tarek was arrested on Aug 2 from Khilgaon by detectives and sent to jail pending trial. On Aug 4, the investigating officer, SI Tofazzal Hossain of the Motijheel DB zonal team, applied for a five-day remand. The court scheduled the hearing for Monday.
During proceedings, Tarek, speaking with court permission, denied involvement, saying: “This case dates to 2022. The Chhatra League committee was formed on Jul 13, 2023. There is no evidence of my physical presence, phone record, or SIM location linking me to the incident.”
Answering the judge’s questions, he said he is unemployed, completed Honours and Master’s at Dhaka University, and has been staying at relatives’ homes since Aug 5.
On Dec 7, detectives carried out a raid on BNP’s Nayapaltan office, causing destruction and attacking thousands of members nearby. BNP worker Mokbul was shot and killed.
On Sept 30, 2022, one Mahfuzur Rahman filed a case against 256 individuals, including the deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina. Police sought Tarek’s remand as a suspect.
