The High Court has granted bail to two suspects in a case over the chasing down and shooting of two people in a car in Chattogram.
The suspects who received bail are Mobarak Hossain Emon and Borhanuddin. Mobarak stands accused in a total of seven cases while Borhanuddin has eight cases against him. The cases include murder charges.
Police had been searching for the two accused in the murder case. Amid this search, the two obtained bail from the High Court. Police claim that despite making “all possible efforts,” they were unable to arrest them.
In Chattogram’s criminal underworld, Mobarak and Borhanuddin are known as associates of Sajjad Hossain, aka “Chhoto Sajjad”. “Chhoto Sajjad,” currently in jail, is a follower of Sajjad Ali Khan, alias “Boro Sajjad,” who is reportedly absconding abroad.
On Mar 30 last year, a car was chased down in the Chandanpura area of the port city’s Chawkbazar area. Gunmen then opened fire on the car, killing two individuals named Bakhtiar Hossain Manik and Md Abdullah. Two others were also injured.
Three days after the incident, a case was filed at Bakalia Police Station by Firoza Begum, the mother of the deceased Bakhtiar Uddin Manik, accusing seven suspects, including Chhoto Sajjad, his wife Sharmin Akter Tamanna, Mobarak Hossain Emon, and Borhanuddin.
In the complaint, it was alleged that the murder was carried out under the “planning” of Chhoto Sajjad and his wife from prison.
In the first week of February this year, the accused Mobarak and Borhanuddin obtained six weeks’ bail from the High Court in the case. The bail order reached Bakalia Police Station in Chattogram last week.
When contacted, Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Deputy Commissioner (South) Hossain Mohammad Kabir Bhuiyan told bdnews24.com, “In the double murder case, two accused—Mobarak Hossain Emon and Borhanuddin—have secured six weeks’ bail from the High Court.”
“We made every possible effort to arrest them. Not only us, but other law enforcing agencies also tried. This criminal group is involved in multiple incidents, which the public is aware of. Still, they have received bail. Bail is a legal process.”
He added that once the six-week bail period ends, the two accused must surrender before the court. “According to the law, they must surrender. We will try our utmost to ensure they do not get bail from the Chattogram court.”
When asked, Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Court Public Prosecutor Advocate Mofizul Haque Bhuiyan said: “The two accused in the double murder case have received six weeks’ bail from the High Court. According to the bail conditions, they must surrender before the Chattogram Sessions Court either before or after the expiry of that period.”
“In that case, after the hearing, the court may grant them bail again—or may not. From the state’s side, we will do everything we can.”
The two people killed in the Mar 30 incident were allegedly followers of another criminal, Sarwar Hossain, also known as “Babla.” Babla himself survived that day, despite being in the same vehicle.
Later, on Nov 5 last year, Babla—listed by police as a criminal—was shot dead during the election campaign of BNP candidate Ershad Ullah in the Chalitataly Khondokia Para area under the jurisdiction of Bayezid Bostami Police Station.
The next day, Nov 7, Babla’s father Abdul Kader filed a murder case naming seven individuals, including Mobarak and Borhanuddin as suspects.
The case alleged that Babla was killed under the “instructions” of Boro Sajjad, who is currently abroad.
In addition to these incidents, there have been several other high-profile crimes in Chattogram, including the murder of another criminal, “Dhakaiya Akbar,” at Patenga Sea Beach, two separate shootings at a businessman’s house for not paying extortion, and a double murder in the Kuwaish area. In many of these cases, followers of the two Sajjads have been accused.
Although Chhoto Sajjad is in jail and Boro Sajjad is absconding abroad, victims and police claim that these crimes are being carried out through their associates. In many of these incidents, the names of Mobarak and Borhanuddin have repeatedly come up.
