A man has allegedly killed his wife and hung her body from a bamboo wall in Narail.

The husband, who was detained by the police, claims that he was unable to stop his wife from posting obscene pictures and videos on TikTok and exchanging obscene pictures and conversations with unknown men, which led to the killing.

The woman's body was recovered from Char Dighlia village in Lohagara Upazila on Monday afternoon, said Ajit Kumar Roy, inspector (investigation) of Lohagara Police Station.

The deceased, Sumona Ferdousi, 38, was the second wife of Limon Mallick, who hailed from the same village.

In addition to running a tea stall in the village, Limon worked as a labourer to cut woods. However, he had previously worked at a garment factory in Dhaka where he had met Sumona. Limon and Sumona tied the knot in Dhaka in 2021, the second time for Limon and the fourth for Sumona.

Citing locals, the police said that Limon later returned to his village home with Sumona. This led to a family feud between Limon and his first wife. After a few days, the first wife moved to her father's house in Rangpur with their only daughter.

Based on the information provided by Limon during the primary interrogation, police said that Sumona used to post inappropriate videos on TikTok and shared “objectionable”’ photos and videos with unknown men. This caused continuous disputes between the couple. However, Sumona had pledged to stop such posts.

Citing arrestee Limon, police said that Sumona broke her promise and posted videos again, leading to an altercation with Limon around 8am on Monday morning. At one point, Limon hit her and she fell on the ground bleeding.

Limon then ensured her death by strangling Sumona and hanging her body from a bamboo wall, according to his confession to the police.

Police said that Limon went out to work as usual around 10am. After working all day, he came home after 5pm and opened the door of the house and started crying and screaming.

When informed, police went to the spot and recovered the body. However, following an inquest report, police confirmed that the incident was not a suicide, but a murder. Limon was arrested and taken to the police station for questioning.

Inspector Ajit said, “After his arrest, Limon confessed that he killed his wife Sumona and described the incident. He basically hanged Sumona in the house to make it look like she had killed herself by suicide.”

He also said the victim’s family has been informed and legal action is under way.
