Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan visited the National Press Club shortly after taking oath, before heading to the Secretariat to assume charge of his ministry.
He arrived at the Press Club around 1pm on Wednesday, accompanied by State Minister for Home Affairs Yaser Khan Chowdhury. They were received by Press Club President Hasan Hafiz. The minister later exchanged greetings with journalists in the TV room.
Among those present were BFUJ Secretary General Kader Gani Chowdhury, Vice President KM Mohsin, Dhaka Union of Journalists President Shahidul Islam, Vice President Bashir Jamal, National Press Club member Kazi Rawnak Hossain and BNP Media Cell member Shayrul Kabir Khan.
Addressing journalists, Swapan said he would continue to stand by the media community.
“I have always been with journalists and will remain so. This Press Club has been my second home since my student days,” he said, recalling his involvement in political activities during that time.
He said he understood that resolving the problems faced by journalists was essential to addressing broader challenges in the media sector.
“The plans of this ministry, in line with our leader Tarique Rahman’s commitment to media freedom, will be placed before you,” he said. “Before that, we will hold discussions with journalists and all stakeholders with patience.”
After the visit, the minister went to the Secretariat to take charge of his new responsibilities. Information Secretary Mahbuba Farzana welcomed him with flowers upon arrival, and he later met ministry officials.
