A court has issued summons against four people, including Ekattor TV Chairman Mustafa Kamal and Chief Operating Officer (COO) Shafik Ahmed, in a case filed over allegations of fraud, breach of trust and death threats.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akter issued the summons on Jun 28, ordering the accused to appear before the court on Aug 13.

Former Ekattor Television news department coordinator Babul Akter filed the case against the four defendants before the same court that day.

The other accused are Asim Kumar, AGM of the company’s human resources department, and Sumon Bhowmik, general manager of the accounts department.

According to the case statement, plaintiff Babul joined Ekattor Television as a coordinator in the news department on May 1 last year. Without any notice, his biometric fingerprint access and official mobile SIM were deactivated on May 12.

Following this, he sent a legal notice through a lawyer on Jun 12. The authorities paid him Tk 88,125 out of his total outstanding dues of Tk 211,840, leaving Tk 123,315 unpaid.

The complaint says Babul verbally informed the accused about the outstanding amount. They assured him that his dues would be paid very soon, prompting him to wait.

The accused subsequently began delaying payment, according to the complaint. On the afternoon of Jun 25, Babul went to the Ekattor Television office in Baridhara to demand his outstanding payment, when the accused allegedly threatened him with dire consequences.

The case further alleges that when he again demanded the money, he faced death threats.
