The Rangpur District Bar Association has said its members will not represent the suspects in a case over the killing of retired teacher Ganapati Chakraborty and three members of his family.
The decision was announced by the association’s General Secretary Aftab Uddin at a press conference at the Bar Association building on Saturday.
Aftab said the move followed discussions among members of the association over the killing of four members of the same family.
He said lawyers had collectively decided not to appear in court on behalf of the accused in the case.
Police recovered the bodies of former Rangpur Zilla School teacher Ganapati, 60, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty, 50, their postgraduate student daughter Agami Chakraborty, 25, and their 12-year-old son Ayush Priyam Chakraborty from their home in the city’s Machuapara area on Aug 22. Post-mortem examinations found that all four had been strangled.
Mugdha Das, 23, and Siddhartha Das, 19, were detained the following morning over the killings. Police have said the two later gave confessional statements before a court.
Investigators initially said the killings followed a confrontation after Ganapati found the two men on the roof of his home and objected to them using yaba there.
Police are now seeking to verify the suspects’ accounts against post-mortem findings, forensic evidence and other material, and have said they also plan DNA and drug tests as they investigate whether anyone else was involved.
