A group of people have paid floral tribute at the Central Shaheed Minar on behalf of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina during International Mother Language Day commemorations.
Around 11:30am on Saturday, five to six people stepped onto the altar and laid flowers bearing the message: “Humble homage on behalf of People’s Leader Sheikh Hasina.”
Witnesses said four young men and actress Mishti Subhash entered through the main gate carrying the tribute.
Hundreds present at the site watched the scene unfold. No attempt was made to obstruct or confront the group.
Although Mishti holds no official post in the party, she has participated in Awami League events across TSC, Dhanmondi 32 and other locations since the 2024 July Uprising, sometimes facing arrests during her activism.
Speaking at the monument, she said she felt “ashamed” that the Jamaat-e-Islami had come to pay tribute there.
Earlier, during the first hour of Ekushey, Jamaat chief and Leader of the Opposition in parliament Shafiqur Rahman placed wreaths at the altar for the first time.
After completing the tribute on behalf of Hasina, Mishti said: “Today at the Central Shaheed Minar, Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh -- the party of Razakars and Al-Badr who opposed the Liberation War in 1971 -- has tarnished the spirit of this place.
“They are plotting anew to turn Bangladesh into Pakistan. We feel ashamed because people seem to be accepting it again.”
“We cannot accept Jamaat’s tribute at the Shaheed Minar. It is a new tactic to deceive the nation,” she added.
