A Dhaka court has sentenced a man to death for slaughtering his wife at their home in the capital's Maddhya Badda nearly nine years ago.
Judge Md Sadequin Habib Bappy of the Sixth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judges’ Court in Dhaka delivered the verdict on Tuesday.
The convict, Manir Hossain, was also fined Tk 100,000.
Court bench assistant Md Abul Kashem said Manir had been out on bail.
Following the conclusion of closing arguments on Jul 14, the court fixed Tuesday for the verdict, cancelled his bail and ordered that he be sent to jail.
Manir was produced before the court from prison ahead of the verdict on Tuesday. After the judgment was pronounced, he was sent back to jail with the conviction warrant.
Mohammad Habibur Rahman, additional public prosecutor of the court concerned, expressed satisfaction with the verdict awarding the maximum punishment.
According to the case documents, Manir married Shakir Khatun Soma in 2003, and the couple had a daughter.
At one stage, he and members of his family began subjecting Soma to physical and mental abuse. She endured the abuse for the sake of their child.
Manir repeatedly demanded money from his wife, claiming he needed it for business. Soma's family gave him Tk 1.1 million on different occasions, but he continued to abuse her for more money.
In February 2017, Manir assaulted Soma and drove her out of their home. She then moved to her mother's house in Badda.
A few days later, he brought her back after promising that he would never mistreat her again. However, the abuse continued.
On Oct 6, an argument broke out between the couple over money. At one point, Manir slit Soma's throat with a knife.
Hearing her screams, neighbours rushed to the house and took her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Later that day, Soma's mother Akhtar Banu filed a murder case with Badda Police Station. Manir was arrested and later gave a confessional statement before a court.
After completing the investigation, Sub-Inspector Bayezid Bostami of Badda Police Station submitted the charge sheet to the court on Dec 7 of the same year.
On May 17, 2018, the court framed charges against Manir and ordered the trial to begin.
During the trial, the court recorded testimony from 15 of the 20 listed prosecution witnesses.
After hearing the defence and closing arguments, the judge found Manir guilty and delivered the verdict.
