A total of 627 workers and employees have been laid off from four companies of the Keya Group in Gazipur.
Gazipur Industrial Police Superintendent Mohammad Amzad Hossain shared the information on Tuesday morning.
In the morning, a list containing the names of the laid-off workers was posted at the main gate of the factories in the Jarun area of Konabari. Workers gathered in front of the factories to see the list, and a sense of quiet anger could be seen among the crowd.
Keya Group Human Resources Manager Sabina Yasmin told journalists, “All the dues of the laid-off workers will be paid in accordance with the labour law within 30 working days.”
The companies where workers were laid off are Keya Group’s Knit Composite Division, Spinning Division, Cotton Division, and Keya Yarn Mills Limited.
The layoff notice, signed by the factory’s managing director and chairman, was posted at the main gate of the factories on Monday evening.
The notice said that the decision to reduce production and administrative costs was taken due to banking complications, the disconnection of the gas supply over unpaid bills, and an excess workforce compared with operational requirements. As a result, several positions in different sections, departments, and divisions have been abolished.
It further said that, under Section 20 of the Bangladesh Labour Act, 2006, surplus workers and employees of the factories would be laid off from Sept 8. Their legally entitled dues will be paid.
The authorities said that if new employees are needed at the factories in the future, skilled workers who have been laid off will be given priority in accordance with Section 21 of the Labour Act.
Employees whose jobs remain intact will continue to be covered under the layoff arrangement and will receive layoff benefits in accordance with the law.
Gazipur Industrial Police Superintendent Mohammad Amzad Hossain said that, to prevent any untoward situation surrounding the layoffs, both the Industrial Police and Gazipur Metropolitan Police have been deployed at the main gates of the factories.
